Thanks to the work of Social Studies teacher Suzi Young and a generous donation from the York Education Foundation, 5th-graders at YMS were treated to an in-school program about Wabanaki storytelling as part of Portland Ovations Wabanaki Stories.
Students enjoyed the masterful storytelling of Jennifer Pictou, a member of the Mi'kmaq tribe, including the story of "The Man Who Wanted to Live Forever." Students also worked in small groups to write their own two-minute morality or cautionary tales.
Part two of this programming occurs today as the fifth grade travels to Merril Auditorium in Portland to watch a production of Wabanaki Stories, created and produced by Wabanaki artists.
Thank you to everyone involved who helps bring these fun and educational experiences to our students!
